There are plenty of places where you can register a domain. It can cost anywhere from $2.99- $25.00 to register a domain that no one has already. Sometimes people are willing to pay thousands of dollars in order to buy a premium domain. A couple of examples of a premium domains are "dog.com cat.com hosting.com". Once you have bought a domain, you can keep it as long as you would like, as long as you keep on renewing it year after year. There are ways for people to take your domain after it has been expired so if your domain is very crucial you should consider buying more than a 1 year plan for your domain in order to secure it for the future. There are new laws being put in place to stop people from taking trademarked/copyrighted names so some things are still protected. Some domain extension examples are .com .net .org .ws .info .tv .edu .co.uk .us .biz , etc ... Listed below are the cheapest, most reliable places to register a domain. Remember that most of the hosting companies that we have reviewed usually come with free domains with the purchase of hosting so you will not need to buy a separate domain through one of these registers if you are planning on buying a hosting plan that comes with a free domain.

Godaddy is probably the most popular domain name registrar in the world and it offers alot of addons for your domain name which is great. It also offers web hosting with shared and dedicated servers.
Saying all this, there are a few things Godaddy can improve on.

1-It should give private domain name registration, which is whois protection, for free with every domain name to it's customers.Currently you have to pay $6.99 extra for private registration for your domain name.If you compare this with another domain name registrar ipowerweb.com,they give you whois protection for free with every domain name.

2-If you join web hosting forums and ask the question on whether you should use godaddy's dedicated servers for advanced web hosting, almost everyone there will tell you not to use godaddy for this because their servers are too complicated to install things on.

Overall I give Godaddy a rating of 5/10. I would have given it 8/10 if it gave it's customers free whois protection with every domain name.

GoDaddy

Godaddy comes with more standard features. is the most popular, and well known domain registration website today.

Price: $7.99/ per year for .com, $6.95/per year for .us, .biz,
NEW! You and I both know that the first necessary step in gaining an internet presence is to have a domain name. With so many advertisements for internet domain registration and hosting agencies, it can be difficult to know exactly what you should do to get your website up and running and out where everyone can get to it. Just take a deep breath and together let’s work through the steps.

The first step in your internet domain registration is to choose a domain name. The name you choose can be just about anything you want, as long as it is not already taken. The rules are not complicated for what is allowed. You must use only letters, numbers, and or hyphens and is limited to 70 characters. However, you should consider fewer characters so that people will be able to remember the domain name. Also, they are case insensitive so capitalization does not matter.

The next step is to determine where you are going to perform your internet domain registration. All domains must be registered, and that can only be done by a certified registrar. There are, literally, hundreds of certified registrars out there that can do an internet domain registration for you. They amount they charge for their service can vary a great deal as well. These companies are closely regulated, but they are allowed to offer internet domain registration through third party companies. If you do choose to act through a third party registrar though, you will likely pay more money.

In most cases, internet domain registrations is for at least a year. If you like, though, you are allowed to register your domain name for up to 10 years at a time. The majority of companies charge you less per year for a longer registration. So if you are positive you are going to be on the web for a while, you may want to consider a multiple year internet domain registration. In addition, you will find that if you register a large number of different domain names, you can save money as well. With that in mind, if you do have several domains, it can be very cost effective to transfer all of the names to one registrar. Check them all out first, though, and find out who will offer you the best deal.

If you want to build a website to give yourself a presence on the internet, there are steps you must take. One of the first and most important of these steps is to get your internet domain registration out of the way. It helps if you have an idea of how the process works. Since there are hundreds of registration services available, be sure to shop around and to check for primary registrars. Working through a third party can get expensive and it is money you don’t need to spend. Also, try to get an idea of how long you think you will be around. Buying more years and more domains will also save you money. Going into the internet domain name registration process, just have all of your ducks in a row and it should be a breeze for you.

If you would like to view more of my personal articles on domain names, please visit my computing site.

Checking if a domain name is freely available is very straightforward as most domain registration services provide a WHOIS service, as the name sugges

By Michael Kralj

A domain name is an alias for an IP address. Now what is an IP address? An IP address is a numeric code that signifies where to look through the Internet for content. An example of an IP address would be 22.226.141.25. Rather than typing in a long and easily forgotten IP address, a domain name helps you by typing an easily remembered name to access the same site.

For example, www.domainsatretail.com is a domain name that points to a specific IP address. People can remember a domain name such as www.domainsatretail.com much easier than they can a long numeric code.

Domain names are everywhere as many use it everyday. Think of search sites. Google and Yahoo both have corresponding domain names www.google.com and www.yahoo.com. If you have ever sent an email you have used a domain name. For example when sending an email to user@sympatico.ca, sympatico.ca is the domain name.

Now that we have a better understanding of domain names, we need to know which domain name to pick and where can we register it. The domain name chosen for a web site can be a very important decision of marketing your company on the Internet. Its quite easy to just say pick a catchy domain that everyone will remember to use and you are set. In most cases it is that simple and you are set on your way to register the domain. However, at times the domain name you want has already been taken. And then you must think of a secondary name that you wish to use that will be just as catchy as the first.

OK, now you have picked your domain name you want. What is next? You need to choose a registrar for you domain name registration. There are many registrars who sign up and are available for the year, but you get no service from them whatsoever. Here are two domain name registrars that I would recommend for completing your domain name registration.

1) Domains at Retail – registrar that registers domain names. We provide great service and have 24/7 customer support. .com domain names are normally on sale for $8.75 US / year, however they are currently being run on promotion for $7.95 US / year. Visit Domains at Retail at http://www.domainsatretail.com for Cheap domain registration and excellent customer service.

2) Domains at Cost – excellent registrar with very competitive prices. I use this registrar for my .ca domain name registrations and renewals. They offer an excellent price ($14.41 CDN per domain name registration) and I am always able to get someone on the phone and my questions answered. Please Visit Domains at Cost at http://www.domainsatcost.ca for .ca Domain Name Registrations!

Good Luck with your domain name registration process and your start to your online marketing!

Michael Kralj is owner of Emenki Web Solutions and Domains at Retail. Emenki Web Solutions are web site designers and programmers based in Hamilton, Ontario, providing businesses with an informative and strategic approach to establishing an online presence on the web.

Domain Names

By Clare Lawrence

Domain names are relatively straightforward! Or at least that’s the theory!!

The domain name is also, but technically not quiet correct, known as the website address.

Using an ISP’s domain name can look amateurish in an e-mail addresses, it is much more so with websites, giving the impression of hanging on another’s coat tails. The only exception being when a firm wants to re-inforce a local or professional affiliation by appearing as part of an existing site dedicated to a region or association. Even in such cases autonomy and continuity are better assured by having one’s own domain and merely using a page on the third party’s site to point users toward it.

Domains are classified according to their endings or “suffixes”. As a commercial organisation a company will almost certainly want a domain ending in .com or .co.uk. Other endings such as .biz and .ltd.uk are at least to date, insufficiently familiar to users, meaning the name can be too readily misremembered. Of the two desirable suffixes, .com is preferable for business with international activities, and arguably gives the impression of a bigger organisation, whilst .co.uk helps reassure users on the largely American-dominated web that they are indeed dealing with a UK firm.

The part of the domain name before the suffix will usually by the firms trading name, provided of course that the domain name has not already been registered, (which is increasingly likely these days). If the name is very long an abbreviation may be considered. Domain names are not case sensitive.

The actual registration of a domain name is a straightforward process that can be done online, either through your ISP or better still through a dedicated registration service company such as Discount Domains Ltd (http://www.discountdomainsuk.com). Renewal fees must be paid, typically every two years.

Checking if a domain name is freely available is very straightforward as most domain registration services provide a WHOIS service, as the name suggest, this checks the ownership details of a domain, note however that such services normally run 48 hours behind actual registrations.

Moving ISP’s can save money, however it may take time and incur extra charges. Pricing in the domain name registration industry have fallen considerably over recent years and a domain name typically now costs from $15 for two years registration.

Once your domain name is registered, you can either leave the domain name “parked” awaiting future use, or point it at a website, this is usually achieved by changing the Domain Name Server, or DNS settings on the domain to point at hosting company where your website is located. Almost all registration services offer a free user control panel to change these settings.

Web hosting is the provision of space on a web server to publish a web site. There are numerous hosting companies in the market, and most domain registration services also offer a hosting solution. Prices vary but $100 per annum should be sufficient for most business needs.

(C) Clare Lawrence 11th May 2004

Domain-name Registrars – Which One?

By John Gibb

You’d think it’d be easy to find the cheapest domain name registrars. Unfortunately, it isn’t. There are simply so many different pricing structures, and a lack of any central comparison website, making a true comparison impossible. In this article, I will look at some common pricing methods, to help you decide which kind of registrar will be best for you.

The first thing you should realise is that most of the companies out there saying they’re domain registrars really aren’t. In order to become a registrar, you have to pay a hefty fee to each one of the registries you want to sell domain names in. Even at high volumes, it takes years to make this fee back. To avoid this high start-up cost, most companies out there just buy domains wholesale from properly registered registrars, and resell them at a small profit. For this reason, the best way to save money is usually to get as close as you can to the original source of the domains. Don’t get stuck in the situation where what you’re buying has been resold three times over – research the company and try to move up the chain.

At the same time, you should notice that the more domains you buy, the cheaper they are. You should use the same registrar each time you register a domain name, and try to register in bulk if you want lots. You will also save a lot of money if you register for more than one year – ten-year domain registrations are actually shockingly good value, for example.

Besides all this, there are all sorts of extras that your registrar can charge you for. It’s up to you to decide how many you want. The various privacy guard services that stop your name and address from being made public are often good value, especially if you think your site might be controversial. Buying hosting at this point, however, is always a bad idea, as the deals you are offered by your registrar will never be as good as the ones you could get from an independent web host.

100 Million Domains

By Ian McKenzie

A brief history of the establishment and growth of the system of assiging unique addresses to Web Sites on the Internet, that we now know as the Domain Name System (DNS).

The U.S. Defence Information Systems Agency created the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) in 1972. This authority was responsible for assigning the unique address (string of numbers) for each computer connected to the Internet.

In 1983, the University of Southern California tested their Automated Domain Name System, in which readable names were used instead of clumsy strings of numbers such as 657.239.038.6.

1985 was the birth of .com and domain names. These addresses mostly belonged to the US government, mainly military.

It was not until 1990 that the Internet went commercial, and it was the following year, 1991 that the World Wide Web (WWW) was introduced. The first WWW software was created by Tim Berners-Lee.

In the following year, 1992,the U.S.'s National Science Foundation (NSF) granted an exclusive contract to Network Solutions Inc., to be the sole registrar for the Top Level Domain (TLD) names .com, .net, .org The NSF maintained a central database of domain names called WHOIS.

For each new Domain name a $100 fee was charged. This fee also allowed for a two-year Registration period. Each additional year after that was charged at the rate of $50.

The rate of domain name registrations in May of 1993 was reported as 400 per month. In September 1994, Network Solutions Inc., reported that it was registering domain names at the rate of 2,000 per month.

Network Solutions Inc.(NSI), maintained its monopoly over TLD name registrations up until 1999. It was in that year that the U.S. Department of Commerce dismantled NSI's monopoly and opened up a competitive market for .com, .net and .org domain names.

The rigid pricing, poor service and frustrating delays should now all be in the past with the now competitive service operating. Unfortunately, however, I continue to hear stories of registrants (or resellers for registrants) charging like wounded buffaloes and giving lousy service. I give an example of this on my web site ianswebsites.info.

I have called this article 100 Million Domains.

At the time of writing this article, (first half of 2007), there are not 100 Million Domains. There is only a mere 65 million. But, when I give you an indication of the incredible growth of Domain Name Registrations, I am sure you will agree with me that we will soon reach the 100 Million Domains target.

On the 6 March, 1997, the one millionth domain Name was registered. On 4 May the following year 1998 the two millionth domain name was registered. It was on 6 November the same year that the three millionth doman name was registered.

9 March, 1999 saw the four millionth, and 29 May the five millionth. April the following year, 2000 saw the ten millionth Domain name registered. And now in 2007, around the 65 millionth mark.

If you graph these statistics, you will see a very steeply rising curve. We may even reach the 100 Million Domains target by the time you read this article.

If you would like further details of the actual Domain Name milestones, I give them on my web site 100MillionDomains.com

The billions of Internet users everywhere are now able to shop for competitive pricing and great service. You are no longer limited to a monopoly of a single private provider. The big guys, the well known guys, are NOT necessarily the ones that offer the best prices and service. Shop around, look at what is offered by the various firms and at what price.

Ian McKenzies Domains provides outstanding services and prices to its customers. Those participating in Ian McKenzies Domains reseller programs are able to retail Domain names at prices lower than other resellers are paying wholesale, and still make a profit.

Internet Domain Names Canada

By Richard Romando

Domain names are the trailing parts of website addresses. They refer to the extensions such as “.com”, “.net”, “.org”, and “.gov”. They are also called top-level domains (TLDs). The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) classifies top-level domains in three types. They are country code top-level domains, generic top-level domains, and infrastructure top-level domains. Country code top-level domains are two-lettered extensions that refer to the sites registered in a particular country. For example, “.uk” indicates that the site is registered in the United Kingdom, and “.in” refers to sites registered in India. Canadian domain names end with the “.ca” extension.

In order to get a site registered with a “.ca” extension, an individual has to be a Canadian citizen or resident, or an organization that has a presence in that country or owns a registered Canadian trademark. CA domains are globally recognized and are accessible as other domains.

The responsibility for operating domain names, including the registration of second-level domains, is delegated to particular organizations. These organizations are referred to as "registry operators", "sponsors", or "delegates". In many countries, local authorities (NICs) are responsible for this administration, which asks for different requirements such as certificates of establishment, registration trademark, etc., In Canada, IP addresses used to be allocated out of the University of Toronto. Recently, it has been taken over by InterNIC, Canada’s domain registration center.

There are many Internet service providers who can, on behalf of the interested group or individual, get the Canadian domain registration and act as their local representative by providing international trademark registrations, Canadian-specific domains and trademark registrations. Their other services include providing Domain Name Services (DNS), allocating a specific amount of web space and monthly traffic from few MBs to GBs, domain forwarding, and domain administration.

Internet Domain Names provides detailed information on Internet Domain Names, Free Internet Domain Names, Generic Internet Domain Names, Internet Domain Names Canada and more. Certainly, if friendship is involved, this person has made very little effort to understand anything about me. Because I had spent considerable time and effort, as well as a financial cost with the aim of providing this person, her husband, and their business, with a tool which I thought may have been useful for them. But, I shall come back to this point later.

This scenario highlights the importance for anyone in business to not only have a web site, but to register multiple domains.

Food is one of my passions in life, so lets take it as an example. I am an Aussie, and the meat pie is about as Australian as a pavlova or a lamington. Lets also suppose that your name is Joe, and you have sent up a business making and distributing meat pies. You have done a search and have found that the name “JoesPies” is available to you. You are an Aussie with an Australian business, so you are entitled to add the extension “.com.au” after the “JoesPies” part.

You have your web site designed and published, and over a period of time you are getting increased traffic to your web site resulting in sales of Joe's Pies. Life is good!

However, some time down the track there happens to be another Joe who wants a web site or sites. Or, it may even be a Fred or a Mary. They do a search and find that “JoesPies” with each of the extensions .com, .net, .name, . biz, .info, are available. A dilemma for Joe, Fred or Mary is which one to choose? Well, my advise for what it is worth would be to register the lot. It is exactly the same advise I would have given the first Joe if he had asked me to protect his business.

The cost of registering them all, (with a competitively priced Registrant), is less than a hundred dollars for a couple of years protection.

I would strongly suggest that you do exactly the same, regardless of the type of business in which you are involved. Because you have registered one domain name only, it does not give you proprietary rights over all of the other extensions. You may not want six or more web sites, perhaps you want one only. That's OK, you can park the others free of charge with reputable Domain name registrants, or even better still you could arrange to have all the Domain names apart from your web site domain name forwarded to your web site URL. Once again, there should not be any extra cost involved in this process.

There is another alternative that is available to you to protect your trading name. You could arrange to have International Trade Marks patented. However, my understanding is that this process takes quite some time and costs are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, it is hardly an option for a relatively small firm like “Joe's Pies”.

Surely spending fifty or so dollars is a far better alternative. Now, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever, if a firm called “Joe's Pies” exists anywhere. Nor, do I know if Joe has any web sites with any of the extensions I have mentioned above. If there is, then rest assured Joe, I have used the name “Joe's Pies” here for exemplification purposes only.

But, back to my opening three paragraphs, and my reason for writing and publishing this article.

For most of my work history I have been involved in education, training and professional development. I do have Post-Graduate qualifications in this area, as well as my practical experience. I know that we as adults learn best working from concrete examples, we learn best by doing, not being told what to do. But how adults learn is probably the subject of another article which I should write.

I have been enjoying dance classes and social dancing at several venues, but at one particular venue in the area where I live, for the last year or so. The proprietors and operators of this venue do have a web site. But I thought a blog site would also be a useful tool for them in their marketing efforts. As a facilitator of learning, and based on what I have said in the paragraph above, I decided to set up a blog site for them, and then explain to them how it operated. If they didn't want it, I could easily take it down again. My company covered the cost of registering the domain name and hosting the blog site and the TLD web site associated with it. I had classed these people as my friends and was happy to spend the six or so hours it took me to build the sites to help them out.

I certainly was not trying to interfere in the running of their business, as I was accused. I was merely offering a “tool” that I thought may have been of assistance to them, for them to choose whether they wanted to use it or not.

The web site, by the way, was highly supportive of their dance business, and of the husband and wife team as teachers. It could have been registered by someone else and not be anywhere near as supportive. Other TLD's for this particular business were still available by the way at the time of writing.

Within five minutes of the abusive phone call I received, I changed the Domain Name Servers for the web site, so it and the blog site were no longer “on air”. I would have done exactly the same , if instead I had been told something like, “thanks, but no thanks”!

So, if you are planning to register a Domain Name for a business, please consider multiple registrations. It may prevent angst from many points of view.

Ian McKenzie is Director of Ian McKenzie's Domains, and Professional Performance Australia. Simply do a WHOIS search on the website name. Name, address, city, state, zip and sometimes even a phone number will be returned.

Procuring a private domain registration is one way in which to protect yourself from unsolicited snail mail and telemarketers. The following advice is primarily for individuals and not for businesses.

Private domain registration provides:

- Identity Protection - When you register a domain name with a private registration, the registry details such as name, address and phone number are replaced by those of a third party. This third party is usually a separate company that is operated by the domain registrar for the sole purpose of offer privacy. You still remain the domain owner, the domain registrar is simply acting as a proxy.

- Spam Protection - Once your real identity has been covered by the third party, your personal details are not available. Spammers cannot send you spam email or junk snail mail. Neither can telemarketers grab your number and call you on the phone. This alone is reason enough for private registration.

- Control what you reveal - By using private domain name registration you control what you reveal. Since the third party information will appear in a WHOIS search of your site, you can then control what information you want to reveal on your own website. Private registration is sorta like opting out of the phone book.

- Keep your website private - By registering privately, your website can remain anonymous. OR you can give your website its own persona or you can choose to tell users what you desire based on your own comfort level.

- Affordable - with the low price of domain names these days, adding a few extra dollars won't break the bank. I have typically seen private domain registrations as low as $4 but never higher than $8 or $9.

Paul Flyer writes about private domain name registration on his Recommended Web Tools website.
